Conversion Rate Optimization: A Framework for Systematic Testing
A systematic framework for conversion rate optimization covering data analysis, test prioritization, statistical rigor, and compounding improvements.
Conversion rate optimization is not about random A/B tests. It is a systematic process for identifying conversion barriers, developing hypotheses, testing solutions, and compounding improvements over time.
Start with data, not opinions. Install heatmap and session recording tools. Analyze where users click, how far they scroll, and where they drop off. This behavioral data reveals what users actually do, not what you think they do.
Prioritize tests using the ICE framework: Impact, Confidence, and Ease. Score each potential test on a 1-10 scale for each criterion. Multiply the scores. Run the highest-scoring tests first. This prevents wasting test cycles on low-impact changes.
Test one variable at a time in standard A/B tests. Testing multiple changes simultaneously makes it impossible to know which change caused the result. Multivariate testing handles multiple variables but requires significantly more traffic.
Statistical significance is non-negotiable. Do not call a test until you reach 95 percent confidence. Do not peek at results and stop early when they look favorable. Pre-determine your sample size and test duration before launching.
