Conversion Rate Optimization Testing Framework
CRO testing framework: hypothesis, ICE prioritization, statistical significance, test duration, what to test first, and documentation.
CRO testing turns opinions into data. Instead of debating whether the green or blue button converts better, you run a test and let your visitors decide.
Hypothesis first: every test starts with a hypothesis. Changing X to Y will increase Z because of reason. Without a hypothesis, you are testing randomly. The hypothesis ensures you learn something regardless of whether the test wins or loses.
Prioritization: you cannot test everything at once. Use the ICE framework — Impact (how much could this change move the needle), Confidence (how sure are you this will work), and Ease (how quickly can you implement it). Score each test idea and work through them in order.
Statistical significance: run tests until you reach statistical significance, typically 95 percent confidence. Ending tests early because results look promising leads to false positives. Calculate the required sample size before launching.
Test duration: run tests for at least one full business cycle (usually one or two weeks minimum) even if you hit statistical significance earlier. Day-of-week and time-of-day effects can skew results if your test only covers part of a week.
One variable at a time: standard A/B tests change one element so you know exactly what caused the difference. Multivariate tests can test multiple elements simultaneously but require much larger sample sizes.
What to test first: focus on high-traffic pages and high-impact elements. Headlines, CTAs, form length, social proof placement, and pricing presentation typically produce the largest conversion lifts. Do not waste time testing font sizes or button corner radius.
Documentation: record every test — hypothesis, variant descriptions, results, significance level, and learnings. Build an institutional knowledge base that prevents re-testing failed ideas and accelerates future optimization.
Iterative testing: winning tests often suggest the next test. If a shorter form beats a longer one, test an even shorter form. If social proof near the CTA wins, test different types of social proof. Build on your wins.
