Google Analytics 4 vs Universal Analytics: What Changed and Why It Matters
Key differences between GA4 and Universal Analytics: event model, engagement rate, cross-platform tracking, machine learning, and conversion tracking.

Google Analytics 4 replaced Universal Analytics as the standard web analytics platform. The differences are fundamental, not cosmetic. Understanding what changed helps you use GA4 effectively.
Event-based model replaces session-based model. In Universal Analytics, a session was the fundamental unit. In GA4, every interaction is an event — page views, clicks, scrolls, purchases. This provides more granular data and more flexible analysis.
Engagement rate replaces bounce rate as the primary engagement metric. GA4 engagement rate measures sessions that lasted 10+ seconds, had 2+ page views, or included a conversion event. This is more meaningful than bounce rate, which simply measured single-page sessions regardless of engagement.
Cross-platform tracking: GA4 tracks users across websites and apps in a single property. Universal Analytics required separate properties for web and app. If you have both a website and a mobile app, GA4 provides unified reporting.
Machine learning integration: GA4 includes predictive metrics like purchase probability and churn probability. It can identify trends and anomalies automatically and alert you to significant changes.
Custom reports and explorations replace Universal Analytics custom reports. The explorations interface provides more analytical flexibility — funnel analysis, path analysis, cohort analysis, and segment overlap are built in.
Data retention: GA4 retains user-level data for 2 or 14 months (your choice). Universal Analytics retained data indefinitely. This impacts historical analysis and requires adjustments to reporting workflows.
Conversion tracking: GA4 allows any event to be marked as a conversion. This is simpler than Universal Analytics goal configuration but requires intentional setup. Out of the box, GA4 does not track conversions unless you configure them.
