How to Create a Marketing Plan: A Template for Any Business Size
Marketing plan template covering executive summary, situation analysis, targeting, goals, strategy, budget, measurement, and timeline.
A marketing plan aligns your team, allocates your budget, and provides a framework for measuring success. Without a plan, marketing becomes reactive — responding to whatever seems urgent rather than pursuing strategic objectives.
Executive summary: one page summarizing your marketing goals, target audience, key strategies, and budget. This section exists for stakeholders who will not read the full plan.
Situation analysis: where are you now? Audit your current marketing performance, competitive position, market trends, and SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats). Ground your plan in reality, not aspiration.
Target audience: who are you trying to reach? Define your ideal customer profiles with specifics — demographics, psychographics, pain points, and buying behavior. If you serve multiple segments, prioritize them.
Goals and objectives: what will you achieve? Use SMART goals — Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound. Generate 500 qualified leads per quarter is a goal. Grow the business is not.
Strategy and tactics: how will you achieve your goals? Strategy is the approach (content marketing to build organic traffic). Tactics are the specific actions (publish 4 blog posts per week targeting commercial keywords).
Budget allocation: how much will you spend and where? Allocate budget by channel, by quarter, and by initiative. Include both media spend and production costs.
Measurement framework: how will you know if it is working? Define KPIs for each strategy, reporting frequency, and decision criteria for adjusting the plan.
Timeline: when will each initiative launch? A marketing calendar ensures consistent execution and prevents last-minute scrambles.
