Marketing Budget Planning: How to Allocate Spend Across Channels
Framework for marketing budget allocation across channels using business goals, historical data, and the 70-20-10 rule.
Marketing budget allocation is the most impactful decision a marketing leader makes. Every dollar allocated to one channel is a dollar not spent elsewhere. Getting the mix right accelerates growth; getting it wrong wastes resources.
Start with business goals, not channels. If the goal is lead generation, allocate more to direct response channels like search ads and email. If the goal is brand awareness, allocate more to social media, content, and video. Goals determine the channel mix, not the other way around.
Historical performance data is your best allocation guide. Analyze which channels generated the most leads and revenue per dollar spent over the last 6-12 months. Allocate more budget to proven performers and reduce or eliminate underperformers.
The 70-20-10 rule provides a starting framework. Allocate 70 percent to proven channels that consistently deliver, 20 percent to emerging channels showing promise, and 10 percent to experimental channels for testing new opportunities.
Account for channel maturation curves. SEO costs more upfront but compounds over time. Paid advertising delivers immediately but costs remain constant. Content marketing is slow to start but creates lasting assets. Balance short-term results with long-term investment.
Review and adjust quarterly. Markets change, algorithms update, and new opportunities emerge. A budget set in January may not be optimal by April. Build flexibility into your plan with quarterly reallocation reviews.
