Marketing Funnel Metrics: What to Measure at Every Stage
Marketing funnel metrics guide: what to measure at awareness, interest, consideration, conversion, retention, and advocacy stages.
Each stage of the marketing funnel has specific metrics that indicate health and identify bottlenecks. Tracking the wrong metrics at the wrong stage leads to misguided optimization.
Awareness metrics: total website traffic, new visitors, social media reach, brand mention volume, and organic search impressions. These metrics tell you whether people are discovering your brand. Growth rate matters more than absolute numbers.
Interest metrics: email subscriber growth, social media follower growth, blog engagement (comments, shares), content download rate, and return visitor percentage. These metrics tell you whether discovery converts to ongoing attention.
Consideration metrics: lead volume, demo requests, pricing page visits, comparison content engagement, and free trial signups. These metrics tell you whether interested prospects are evaluating your offer seriously.
Conversion metrics: conversion rate, cost per acquisition, average deal size, sales cycle length, and close rate. These metrics tell you whether evaluation converts to purchase. Track both volume and efficiency.
Retention metrics: customer churn rate, repeat purchase rate, NPS score, product usage (for SaaS), and customer support ticket volume. These metrics tell you whether customers stay and find value.
Advocacy metrics: referral rate, review volume and rating, social media mentions, case study participation willingness, and word-of-mouth attribution. These metrics tell you whether satisfied customers actively promote your brand.
Funnel conversion rates between stages reveal bottlenecks. If awareness is high but interest is low, your content is not resonating. If consideration is high but conversion is low, your sales process or pricing needs work.
