Marketing Report Templates: What to Include for Clients and Stakeholders
How to structure marketing reports for clients and stakeholders with executive summaries, channel breakdowns, comparisons, and action items.
Marketing reports serve two purposes: proving results and guiding decisions. A report that fails at either is a wasted document. The best reports are structured for both audiences — executives who skim and analysts who dig.
Lead with the executive summary. Three to five sentences covering key performance changes, budget utilization, and recommended actions. If someone reads only this section, they should understand how marketing performed this period.
Organize by channel, not by metric. Report Google Ads performance, then SEO performance, then social media, each with its own section. Within each section, cover spend, traffic, leads, and revenue. This matches how stakeholders think about marketing investments.
Always include period-over-period comparisons. Month-over-month shows short-term trends. Year-over-year controls for seasonality. Without comparison context, numbers are meaningless — 100 leads means nothing until you know last month was 80 or 150.
Include what did not work alongside what did. Reporting only wins erodes trust over time. Honest reporting of underperforming campaigns, along with your analysis and corrective actions, builds credibility.
End with next steps and recommendations. A report without action items is a history document. Include specific plans for the next period: campaigns to launch, tests to run, budget shifts to make.
