Programmatic Advertising: A Beginner Guide
Programmatic advertising guide: RTB, DSPs, targeting, ad formats, brand safety, viewability, attribution, and budget planning.
Programmatic advertising uses automated technology to buy and sell digital ad inventory in real time. Instead of negotiating placements manually with individual publishers, algorithms match your ads to relevant inventory across thousands of websites and apps.
How it works: when a user loads a webpage, the available ad space is auctioned in milliseconds through real-time bidding (RTB). Your demand-side platform (DSP) evaluates the opportunity against your targeting criteria and budget, places a bid, and if you win, your ad is displayed — all before the page finishes loading.
Demand-side platforms (DSP): these platforms allow advertisers to buy ad inventory programmatically. Popular DSPs include Google DV360, The Trade Desk, Amazon DSP, and MediaMath. Your DSP is where you set targeting, budgets, and bidding strategies.
Targeting options: programmatic offers precise targeting — demographics, interests, behavior, context, geography, device type, time of day, and custom audiences. First-party data (your customer data) combined with programmatic targeting creates highly relevant ad placements.
Ad formats: display banners, native ads, video (pre-roll, mid-roll, outstream), connected TV (CTV), digital audio, and digital out-of-home (DOOH). Programmatic is not limited to banner ads — it spans every digital advertising format.
Brand safety: programmatic advertising runs across thousands of websites, which creates brand safety concerns. Use blocklists, allowlists, and contextual targeting to control where your ads appear. Third-party verification tools like IAS and DoubleVerify monitor placement quality.
Viewability: not every ad impression is actually seen. Ads below the fold, in background tabs, or on bot traffic do not deliver value. Set viewability targets and monitor viewability metrics. Industry standard is at least 50 percent of the ad visible for at least one second.
Attribution: programmatic campaigns contribute to conversions across the customer journey. View-through conversions (someone saw your ad but converted later through another channel) are common in programmatic. Multi-touch attribution models help quantify programmatic contribution.
Budget: programmatic can work at various budget levels, but competitive CPMs and the need for sufficient data to optimize mean that very small budgets may not generate meaningful results. Work with your DSP or agency to determine minimum viable spend for your goals.
