Brand Positioning: Finding Your Place in the Market
Brand positioning: positioning statement, competitive analysis, target audience, unique value, messaging hierarchy, and testing.
Brand positioning defines how your brand occupies a distinct place in the minds of your target audience relative to competitors. Without deliberate positioning, your market positions you by default.
Positioning statement: a one-sentence internal statement that defines your target audience, category, unique benefit, and reason to believe. This guides every marketing decision. It is not a tagline — it is a strategic foundation.
Competitive analysis: map your competitive landscape. Who are your direct and indirect competitors? How do they position themselves? Where are the gaps? Positioning is relative — you cannot position yourself without understanding what already exists.
Target audience specificity: the narrower your target audience definition, the stronger your positioning can be. A marketing agency for everyone has weak positioning. A marketing agency for B2B SaaS companies with $5-50M revenue has strong positioning.
Unique value: what do you offer that competitors do not? This could be a product feature, a service approach, expertise in a specific industry, pricing model, customer experience, or combination of factors. The value must be meaningful to your target audience.
Consistency across touchpoints: positioning must be reflected in your website, sales conversations, content, advertising, customer experience, and company culture. Inconsistency dilutes positioning.
Messaging hierarchy: translate your positioning into customer-facing messages. Primary message (the main thing you want people to remember), supporting messages (proof points and benefits), and reasons to believe (evidence and credentials).
Testing positioning: test positioning statements with your target audience before committing. Surveys, interviews, and landing page tests reveal whether your intended positioning resonates. What you think differentiates you may not be what the market values.
Evolution: positioning is not permanent. Markets shift, competitors enter, and customer needs evolve. Review your positioning annually and adjust when the competitive landscape changes significantly.
