Website Migration SEO Checklist: Avoid Traffic Loss
Website migration SEO checklist: URL mapping, redirects, content preservation, technical verification, launch, and monitoring to prevent traffic loss.
Website migrations — redesigns, platform changes, domain moves — are the most common cause of catastrophic SEO traffic loss. Proper planning and execution can prevent or minimize the damage.
Pre-migration: map every existing URL that receives organic traffic. Export your full URL list from Google Search Console, Screaming Frog, or your CMS. Identify pages with backlinks using Ahrefs or Moz. These are your highest-priority URLs.
Redirect mapping: create a 1:1 redirect map from old URLs to new URLs. Every old URL should have a corresponding 301 redirect. Never redirect everything to the homepage — this tells search engines that the individual pages no longer exist.
Content preservation: ensure all content that ranks on the old site exists on the new site. If a page ranks for specific keywords, the new version should contain equivalent or better content targeting those keywords.
Technical checklist: verify robots.txt allows crawling, XML sitemap is updated and submitted, canonical tags point to correct URLs, internal links point to new URLs (not relying on redirects), hreflang tags are updated, structured data is present and valid.
Staging environment testing: crawl your staging site with Screaming Frog before launch. Check for broken links, missing pages, redirect chains, duplicate content, and missing meta data. Fix issues before going live.
Launch day: submit updated sitemap to Google Search Console immediately. Monitor index coverage report daily for the first two weeks. Check for crawl errors, redirect issues, and dropped pages.
Post-migration monitoring: track organic traffic daily for the first month. Compare keyword rankings before and after. Some temporary fluctuation is normal — significant sustained drops indicate a problem. Common issues: broken redirects, missing content, blocked crawling, and noindex tags left from staging.
Timeline: expect 2-4 weeks for Google to process a migration fully. Large sites take longer. Do not panic at initial fluctuations, but investigate sustained drops immediately.
