How to Build a Marketing Dashboard That Executives Actually Use
How to build marketing dashboards that communicate business impact to executive stakeholders.
Most marketing dashboards fail because they report what marketers care about rather than what executives need to see. Executives want to know three things: is marketing generating revenue, is it efficient, and is it trending up or down.
Start with pipeline contribution — how much qualified pipeline did marketing generate this period versus last. Follow with cost per acquisition and how it compares to target. End with channel-level performance showing where budget is most efficiently deployed.
Avoid vanity metrics on executive dashboards. Website traffic, social followers, and email open rates are internal marketing KPIs, not business metrics. If they appear on the dashboard, they should connect directly to revenue impact.
Update frequency matters. Weekly updates for campaign-level data, monthly for strategic metrics. Real-time dashboards encourage micro-management and overreaction to normal variance.
