Video Scripting: Writing Scripts That Sound Natural on Camera
Written copy and spoken scripts are fundamentally different. Here is how to write video scripts that sound like a real person talking, not reading.
The biggest mistake in video scripting is writing the way you would write an article and then reading it on camera. Written language and spoken language follow different rules. Sentences that look great on paper sound stiff and unnatural when spoken aloud. Video scripts need to be written for the ear, not the eye.
Write Conversationally
Use contractions. Start sentences with "and" or "but." Use shorter sentences with simpler vocabulary than you would in writing. Read every line aloud as you write it. If it feels awkward to say, rewrite it until it flows naturally from your mouth.
Structure for Retention
Open with a hook that tells viewers why this video matters to them. Preview what they will learn. Deliver your content in clear sections with transitions that signal what is coming next. Close with a summary and clear next step. This structure keeps viewers oriented and engaged throughout.
The Teleprompter Question
Teleprompters allow presenters to maintain eye contact with the camera while reading their script. But teleprompter delivery often looks robotic. If using a teleprompter, practice enough to deliver naturally. If not using one, memorize key points rather than exact wording and speak from understanding rather than memory.
Timing Your Script
The average speaking pace for video is 130 to 150 words per minute. A two-minute video needs approximately 260 to 300 words. Time your script by reading it aloud at your natural pace, including pauses. Always err on the side of shorter: a tight two-minute video beats a padded five-minute one.
Building a Video Workflow
Launch your video strategy using the tools you have right now. Smartphone cameras and natural lighting produce surprisingly professional results when paired with strong storytelling. Map out three to five content formats that match your audience viewing habits, then publish consistently on the platforms where they spend time.

Pre-Production Planning
Thorough pre-production separates professional video content from amateur footage. Define your video objective, target audience, and distribution platform before writing a single line of script. Create detailed shot lists and storyboards that map each scene, camera angle, and transition. Scout locations, arrange talent and wardrobe, and prepare all equipment well in advance. Budgeting for contingencies — typically 10-15% of total production costs — prevents scope creep from derailing your timeline when unexpected challenges arise during filming.
Key Video Distribution and Search
Execution matters more than perfection when it comes to video scripting. Launch with a solid plan, gather feedback quickly, and improve continuously. The organizations that move fastest — while staying grounded in their data — are the ones that pull ahead.
