Competitive Analysis Framework for Marketing Teams
Competitive analysis framework: competitor identification, digital audit, SEO analysis, paid media, content, pricing, reviews, and quarterly updates.
Competitive analysis reveals opportunities your competitors are missing and threats you need to defend against. A structured framework prevents analysis from becoming an unfocused data dump.
Identify your competitive set: direct competitors (same product, same market), indirect competitors (different product, same need), and aspirational competitors (where you want to be). Most businesses should track 3-5 direct competitors and 2-3 aspirational ones.
Digital presence audit: review each competitor website, social media profiles, content, and advertising. Document their positioning, messaging, target audience signals, and content strategy. Note what they emphasize and what they ignore.
SEO competitive analysis: identify keywords your competitors rank for that you do not. Tools like Ahrefs and SEMrush show keyword gaps, backlink profiles, and content strategies. This reveals content opportunities and link-building targets.
Paid media analysis: use Meta Ad Library, Google Ads Transparency Center, and tools like SpyFu to see competitor ad creative, messaging, and offers. Note what they promote, how they position it, and which landing pages they use.
Content analysis: audit competitor blogs, resources, podcasts, and video content. What topics do they cover? How often do they publish? What formats do they use? Where are the gaps you can fill with better content?
Pricing and packaging: understand how competitors price their products or services. Are they competing on price, value, or premium positioning? Where does your pricing sit relative to the market?
Customer reviews and feedback: read competitor reviews on Google, G2, Capterra, Yelp, and industry-specific platforms. Customer complaints reveal product weaknesses. Customer praise reveals strengths you may need to match.
Update cadence: competitive analysis is not a one-time project. Update your competitive file quarterly. Markets shift, competitors launch new products, and positioning evolves.
