Email Copywriting: Subject Lines to Body to CTA
Great email design means nothing without great copy. Here is a framework for writing emails that get opened, read, and clicked.
Email copywriting follows different rules than website copy, blog posts, or social media. You are writing for an audience that is scanning quickly, deciding in seconds whether to read or delete, and viewing your message alongside dozens of competing messages in their inbox.
Subject Lines
Subject lines should create curiosity or communicate clear value in under 50 characters. Avoid clickbait that your email content cannot deliver on. Test questions versus statements, specific numbers versus vague promises, and personalized versus generic approaches. The best subject line is one that only your best subscribers would want to open.
Preview Text
Preview text is the second subject line that many marketers ignore. Use it to complement your subject line, not repeat it. If your subject line creates curiosity, your preview text should hint at the answer. If your subject line states a benefit, preview text should add specificity.
Body Copy
Start with the most important information. Use short paragraphs and sentences. Write for scanners with bold text, subheadings, and bullet points for key details. One idea per email performs better than trying to cover everything in one send.
Calls to Action
Use a single primary CTA per email. Make it visually prominent and action-oriented. "Shop the Sale" is better than "Click Here." Place your CTA where it follows naturally from your argument, not necessarily at the bottom of the email.
Deliverability and Performance
Even the best email content is worthless if it doesn't reach the inbox. Monitor your sender reputation, authenticate your domain with SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records, and avoid spam trigger words in your subject lines. Test emails across different clients and devices before sending. Track key metrics including open rates, click rates, unsubscribe rates, and conversion rates. Benchmark your performance against industry averages and continuously optimize based on what the data tells you.
Building a High-Quality Email List
Your email list is one of your most valuable marketing assets. Focus on attracting subscribers who genuinely want to hear from you by offering compelling lead magnets like templates, checklists, calculators, or exclusive research. Use double opt-in to ensure list quality and reduce spam complaints. Regularly clean your list by removing inactive subscribers who haven't engaged in six months or more. Segment your list based on behavior, preferences, and purchase history to deliver more relevant content.
