Google Analytics 4 Setup Guide for Marketers
GA4 setup guide: property creation, conversions, enhanced measurement, custom events, audiences, Google Ads integration, and explorations.
GA4 is the current standard for website analytics. Proper setup ensures you collect the right data from day one and can make informed marketing decisions.
Property creation: create a GA4 property in your Google Analytics account. Install the tracking code via Google Tag Manager (recommended) or directly in your website code. Verify data is flowing before proceeding with configuration.
Conversion events: define your key conversion events. For lead generation: form submissions, phone calls, chat initiations. For e-commerce: purchases, add to cart, begin checkout. Mark these as conversion events in GA4.
Enhanced measurement: GA4 automatically tracks page views, scrolls, outbound clicks, site search, video engagement, and file downloads. Review these settings and disable any you do not need.
Custom events: create custom events for interactions GA4 does not track automatically. Button clicks, tab switches, accordion opens, and other micro-conversions provide insight into user behavior.
Audiences: build audiences based on behavior for remarketing and analysis. Create audiences for converters, high-engagement visitors, specific page visitors, and returning users.
Google Ads integration: link GA4 to Google Ads to import conversion data, create remarketing audiences, and view Google Ads performance within GA4 reports.
Exploration reports: GA4 Explorations allow custom analysis beyond standard reports. Funnel exploration, path exploration, and segment overlap reveal insights that standard reports miss.
Data retention: GA4 defaults to 2-month data retention for exploration reports. Extend to 14 months in property settings. For longer-term analysis, connect GA4 to BigQuery (free for moderate data volumes).
