How to Write a Marketing Brief That Gets Results
How to write effective marketing briefs covering background, objectives, audience, key message, mandatories, timeline, and budget.
A marketing brief is the document that aligns everyone — internal team, agency, freelancers — on what a project should accomplish before work begins. Bad briefs produce bad work. Good briefs produce focused, effective work.
Background section explains the context. What is happening in the business that created this need? What has been tried before? What worked and what did not? Context prevents the team from repeating past mistakes or missing important constraints.
Objective section states what success looks like in specific, measurable terms. Generate 200 qualified leads is a clear objective. Increase brand awareness is not. If you cannot measure it, you cannot brief it.
Target audience section describes who you are trying to reach. Demographics, psychographics, pain points, and where they consume information. The more specific the audience description, the more targeted the creative output.
Key message section identifies the single most important thing you want the audience to think, feel, or do after encountering the campaign. One message. Not three messages in priority order — one. Multiple messages dilute impact.
Mandatories section lists non-negotiable requirements: brand guidelines, legal disclaimers, approval processes, and technical specifications. Include these upfront to avoid rework.
Timeline and budget sections set realistic parameters. If the budget is 5,000 dollars, do not brief a project that requires 50,000 dollars of work. If the deadline is two weeks, do not brief a project that needs two months.
A brief should be one to two pages. Longer briefs are not read. The discipline of brevity forces clarity of thought.
