Influencer Marketing Strategy: Finding and Working With Creators
Influencer marketing strategy: finding creators, compensation, creative briefs, FTC compliance, measurement, and long-term partnerships.
Influencer marketing works because people trust recommendations from people they follow more than they trust brand advertising. The strategy is finding the right creators, structuring the right partnerships, and measuring the right outcomes.
Micro-influencers vs mega-influencers: micro-influencers (10K-100K followers) typically deliver higher engagement rates and more targeted audiences than celebrities. Their recommendations feel more authentic because their audience size is closer to a trusted friend than a media personality.
Finding the right influencers: look beyond follower count. Evaluate engagement rate, audience demographics, content quality, brand alignment, and the authenticity of their following. Tools like HypeAuditor and Modash help verify audience quality.
Outreach: personalize your approach. Reference specific content you appreciate. Explain why you think the partnership makes sense for both parties. Cold templates with no personalization get ignored.
Compensation models: pay-per-post is the simplest. Affiliate commission incentivizes the creator to drive sales. Product gifting works for smaller creators but is not a substitute for fair compensation for larger ones. Retainer agreements provide consistency for ongoing partnerships.
Creative brief: provide brand guidelines, key messages, and required disclosures, but give creators freedom in execution. Overly scripted content feels inauthentic and underperforms because it does not match the creator tone their audience follows them for.
FTC compliance: all sponsored content must be clearly disclosed. Hashtags like ad and sponsored must be prominent, not buried in a wall of hashtags. The FTC has increased enforcement, and non-compliance creates legal risk for both the brand and the creator.
Measurement: track reach, engagement, website traffic (UTM links), conversions (unique discount codes), and brand lift. Not every influencer campaign drives immediate sales — brand awareness and trust-building are valid outcomes for top-of-funnel campaigns.
Long-term partnerships: ongoing creator relationships outperform one-off posts. When a creator mentions your brand repeatedly over months, their audience begins to associate the creator with your brand, creating genuine advocacy.
