Marketing Analytics: Metrics That Actually Matter
Marketing analytics guide: CAC, CLV, ROAS, conversion rates, cost per lead, organic traffic, email engagement, and pipeline velocity.
Marketing teams drown in data while starving for insight. The solution is not more metrics but fewer — the right ones, measured consistently, and acted upon.
Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC): total marketing and sales spend divided by the number of new customers acquired. This tells you how much you pay for each customer. Track it by channel to identify which channels are most efficient.
Customer Lifetime Value (CLV): the total revenue a customer generates over their entire relationship with your business. When CLV is significantly higher than CAC, your marketing is building long-term value. When they are close, you are barely breaking even.
Return on Ad Spend (ROAS): revenue generated from advertising divided by the cost of that advertising. A ROAS of 4:1 means every dollar spent returns four dollars. Track ROAS by campaign, ad set, and creative to optimize spend allocation.
Conversion rate: the percentage of visitors who complete a desired action. Track conversion rates at each stage of your funnel — visit to lead, lead to qualified lead, qualified lead to customer. This reveals where prospects are dropping off.
Cost per lead: total spend on a campaign divided by the number of leads generated. Compare this across channels and campaigns. But always pair it with lead quality — cheap leads that never convert are not valuable leads.
Organic traffic growth: month-over-month organic search traffic indicates whether your SEO and content marketing investments are compounding. Organic traffic is the most sustainable traffic source because it does not require ongoing ad spend.
Email engagement: open rates and click rates indicate the health of your email program. Declining engagement signals list fatigue, relevance problems, or deliverability issues. Track unsubscribe rates as a health check.
Pipeline velocity: how quickly leads move through your sales pipeline. Marketing influences pipeline velocity through lead quality, nurture content, and sales enablement materials.
