Marketing Attribution Models Explained
Marketing attribution models: last-click, first-click, linear, time-decay, position-based, data-driven, and practical implementation.
Attribution models determine which marketing touchpoints get credit for conversions. The model you choose directly affects how you evaluate channel performance and allocate budget.
Last-click attribution: gives 100 percent credit to the last touchpoint before conversion. Simple but misleading — it ignores every touchpoint that contributed to the conversion except the final one. This model undervalues awareness and consideration channels.
First-click attribution: gives 100 percent credit to the first touchpoint. Useful for understanding which channels drive initial awareness. But it ignores the nurture and conversion touchpoints that closed the deal.
Linear attribution: distributes credit equally across all touchpoints. Fair but unsophisticated — it assumes every touchpoint is equally important, which is rarely true.
Time-decay attribution: gives more credit to touchpoints closer to conversion. Recognizes that recent interactions are often more influential. Good for businesses with shorter sales cycles.
Position-based (U-shaped): gives 40 percent credit to first touch, 40 percent to last touch, and distributes 20 percent across middle touchpoints. Balances awareness and conversion credit.
Data-driven attribution: uses machine learning to analyze your conversion data and assign credit based on actual impact. GA4 default model. Requires sufficient conversion volume to work well.
Multi-touch attribution challenges: cross-device tracking, cookie deprecation, and walled garden data (Meta, Google each see only their own touchpoints) make perfect attribution impossible. Accept directional accuracy rather than demanding precision.
Practical approach: use data-driven attribution as your primary model but review results through multiple models to build a complete picture. No single model tells the full story.
