UTM Parameters: A Complete Guide to Campaign Tracking
UTM parameters guide: five parameters, naming conventions, when to use them, GA4 analysis, and common mistakes.
UTM parameters are tags added to URLs that tell Google Analytics where your traffic comes from. Without UTMs, you cannot distinguish traffic from your email newsletter versus your LinkedIn post.
The five UTM parameters: utm_source (where traffic comes from), utm_medium (the channel), utm_campaign (the campaign name), utm_term (keyword for paid search), and utm_content (for differentiating similar content).
Naming conventions: use lowercase only (GA4 is case-sensitive). Use hyphens or underscores, never spaces. Document conventions so every team member uses the same values.
When to use UTMs: any link shared externally. Do not use UTMs on internal website links.
UTM builder tools: Google Campaign URL Builder, UTM.io, and custom spreadsheets help generate consistent UTMs.
Analyzing UTM data in GA4: navigate to Acquisition reports to see traffic by source, medium, and campaign.
Common mistakes: inconsistent naming, UTMs on internal links, not using UTMs at all on emails and social.
