Website Analytics for Beginners: Understanding Your Traffic Data
Beginner guide to website analytics covering users, sessions, traffic sources, bounce rate, conversion rate, engagement metrics, and goal tracking.
Website analytics tell you who visits your site, how they found you, what they do, and whether they take the actions you want. Understanding basic analytics transforms marketing from guessing to decision-making.
Users and sessions are different metrics. A user is a unique person. A session is a visit. One user can have multiple sessions. Track both — users show your audience size, sessions show your traffic volume.
Traffic sources reveal where visitors come from. Organic search (from Google), direct (typed your URL), social (from social media), referral (from other websites), and paid (from advertising). Each source has different characteristics and value.
Bounce rate measures the percentage of visitors who leave after viewing only one page. High bounce rates on blog posts are normal — people read the article and leave. High bounce rates on landing pages indicate a problem with message match or user experience.
Conversion rate is the percentage of visitors who complete a desired action. If 100 people visit your contact page and 5 submit the form, your conversion rate is 5 percent. Track conversion rates for every important action on your site.
Pages per session and average session duration indicate engagement depth. More pages and longer sessions generally indicate that visitors find your content valuable and explore further.
Set up goals in your analytics platform to track specific conversions. Form submissions, phone number clicks, page views of key pages, and purchase completions should all be configured as tracked goals.
Review analytics weekly for trends and monthly for strategic insights. Look for changes in traffic volume, source mix, top landing pages, and conversion rates.
