Website Migration SEO Checklist: Preserving Rankings During Platform Changes

Website migrations — changing platforms, domains, or URL structures — risk significant organic traffic loss if SEO is not carefully managed throughout the process.

Pre-migration audit: crawl your entire current site. Document every URL, its organic traffic, ranking keywords, and backlinks. This baseline lets you identify and fix any traffic losses after migration.

URL mapping is the most critical deliverable. Create a spreadsheet mapping every old URL to its new URL counterpart. If URL structures change, every page needs a corresponding 301 redirect. Missing redirects cause 404 errors that immediately lose rankings.

Content preservation: do not change content during migration. Changing platform and content simultaneously makes it impossible to diagnose issues. Migrate content first, then improve it after rankings stabilize.

Technical SEO verification post-migration: check that robots.txt allows crawling, XML sitemap is submitted, canonical tags are correct, meta robots tags are not blocking indexing, and internal links point to new URLs (not relying on redirect chains).
