Social Media Advertising Budget: How Much Should You Spend?
Framework for determining social media advertising budgets based on CPA targets, platform minimums, funnel allocation, and scaling strategy.
The right social media advertising budget depends on your business size, goals, and the cost of reaching your audience. There is no universal answer, but there are frameworks for finding yours.
Start with your target cost per acquisition. If a new customer is worth 500 dollars over their lifetime and you are comfortable spending 50 dollars to acquire one, that is your CPA target. Work backward from there to determine how much budget reaches that target given your conversion rates.
Platform minimums matter. Facebook and Instagram require approximately 5-10 dollars per day per ad set to exit the learning phase effectively. Running below this wastes spend on inefficient delivery. For most local businesses, 500-1500 dollars per month per platform is a realistic starting point.
Allocate by funnel stage. Brand awareness campaigns are cheaper per impression but further from conversion. Retargeting campaigns cost more per impression but convert at much higher rates. A common split is 70 percent prospecting, 30 percent retargeting.
Scale gradually. Increasing budget by more than 20-30 percent at once can disrupt algorithm optimization. If a campaign performs well at 1000 dollars per month, scale to 1200-1300, evaluate, then continue increasing.
Reserve 10-20 percent of budget for testing. New audiences, creative variations, and platforms should be tested continuously to find new growth opportunities and prevent creative fatigue.
